OGameXL is a free space strategy game you play in your browser. You start with a single planet and a handful of resources. What you build from there is up to you.
OGameXL is a massively multiplayer online strategy game set in space. Every player begins on one planet in a shared galaxy. You mine metal, crystal and deuterium, use those resources to raise mines and factories, research new technologies, and build a fleet. Once you have ships you can colonise new planets, send expeditions into deep space, trade with other players, or attack them and take what they have built.
There is no story mode and no ending. The universe runs continuously, in real time, whether you are logged in or not. Your mines keep producing while you sleep, and a fleet you launched an hour ago keeps flying until it arrives. That is the core of the genre: decisions you make now pay off, or cost you, hours later.
The game is played entirely in a web browser. There is nothing to download and nothing to install. It works on desktop and on mobile.
A new account gets one home planet with a small starting stock of resources. The first hours are about economy: build your metal mine, crystal mine and deuterium synthesiser, then a solar plant to power them. Nothing else in the game works without production.
After that you unlock the Research Lab and the technology tree opens up. Energy Technology, Combustion Drive and Espionage Technology come early and matter more than they look. Once your shipyard is running you can build your first Small Cargos and Light Fighters, and the game turns from a builder into a strategy game against other people.
New players are protected. Accounts below a certain score cannot be attacked by much larger players, so nobody gets farmed on their first day. The in-game Directives system walks you through the opening chapters step by step and pays out rewards as you complete them.
Speed settings decide how fast the game moves, and they belong to a universe rather than to the game as a whole. Each universe below lists its own live values.
| Universe | Economy | Research | War fleet | Peaceful fleet |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Centaurus | 1000x | 500x | 6x | 8x |
These values are read live from the server, so this table is always current. Additional universes will appear here as they open.
The game interface is fully translated into 13 languages. You can switch language at any time from the menu, and your choice is remembered on your account.
The forum is English-only on purpose, so that players from every country read the same discussion in one place.
Dark Matter is the premium currency. You can earn it inside the game by sending expeditions into deep space, and you can also buy it.
It pays for officers, which are account-wide bonuses such as extra fleet slots, better production or a wider galaxy view. It also pays for convenience: instantly finishing a building, moving a planet, restoring a destroyed fleet from a battle report, or buying an item from the shop.
What Dark Matter does not buy is a fleet. You cannot purchase ships, resources or research directly. A paying player reaches their empire faster and with less friction, but the ships that decide a battle still have to be built out of metal, crystal and deuterium that somebody mined.
The server is hosted in Germany, which keeps latency low across Europe and the Middle East.
Registration is free and takes an email address and a password. There is no client, no launcher and no app store. Log in from any browser and your empire is where you left it.
The forum is open to read without an account, so you can see what the server is actually like before you sign up. Strategy guides, bug reports, alliance recruitment and war declarations all live there. In game there is a global chat, a private message system, alliances with their own internal boards, and a support ticket system if something goes wrong.
Creating an account is free and takes less than a minute.
